Always interested..

And I agree to a point.. that internal or national perceptions of certain Leaders and their actions often differ in comparison to that of the outside worlds view.( Such is the case in Iraq, concerning Saddam)

One big thing that happened between 1989 and now was that the Soviet Union collapsed and broke apart. There is an important segment of the Russian population that views that not as liberation from tyranny but defeat, the culmination of the events of 1989, and Putin appears to be feeding on such sentiments. One telling example of this is the way Stalin is now treated in high school textbooks. I still don't think we're in a new Cold War. It's more like Putin paid attention to the Iraq War, unfortunately learning the wrong lessons. (Two of my posts on the Causasus on Stoneman's Corner deal with this, if you're interested.)
